Where Is America Today?
![]() |
America has left its roots. America was founded as a distinctly Christian nation and rightly instructed by God in forming its government, making it the envy and shining hope for democracy and freedom for the world. For decades millions have forsaken their native lands and cultures, often making dangerous journeys to resettle in this country. You never hear of Christians blessed in their countries immigrating to non-Christian countries. And God further blessed the United States by giving it a high standard of living, great and continuing prosperity, and peace within its borders. This nation was never perfect and has made notable mistakes, but there has never been a nation in world history so different, so blessed as the United States of America.
American citizens from earlier times would be shocked at how we live today. People from older generations now notice the lack of unity and common values that America had before. Up until the 1950's, the biggest problem public school teachers had with their students was loud talking and chewing gum. Today, even public schools in small towns have fatal shootings, gang fights, and rapes. Drugs have been sold by elementary school students on school playgrounds. In the 1960's the word pregnant could not even be pronounced on television shows! Now, all four-letter words, a vocabulary once unacceptable anywhere in public, are heard on television. Frontal nudity can be seen.
And this alone grieved God. He knew the suffering coming from this. He saw our rebellion despite His many blessings. And this angered God. He began sending warning signs. But we didn't care.
Like a crack addict needing a stronger dose to maintain his "high", America purposed to rebel more. Feminism grew stronger in the 1960's, calling women to abandon their families and work outside their homes. The result? Latchkey kids scoring lower in reading and higher teen and preteen pregnancy rates. Two Supreme Court decisions of the '60 legalized birth control pills, increasing the incidence of over 25 venereal diseases, three of which can be fatal. Divorce, around 5% in 1948, reached about 50% by the late '60's. The line held by the clergy against this tide of sin largely vanished, with now virtually no pastors questioning birth control, remarriage of divorcees, or women working outside the home, despite clear biblical standards otherwise.
And God was grieved more. His anger grew. He sent more, and stronger, warning signs. But we didn't care.
Hungry for more sin, America rose to proudly proclaim its rebellion with "gay pride" marches attended by thousands in major cities, and homosexual clergy were accepted in denominations. Homosexual activists, led by the North American Man Boy Love Association, called for lowering of sex between adults and children to the child's age five. AIDS, originally and still largely a homosexual disease, claimed the lives of many thousands.
Still not content with such death and suffering, America demanded more. Representing a woman who never had or wanted an abortion, a feminist Dallas woman lawyer led the Supreme Court to the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, and along with the Doe vs. Bolton decision made at the same time, open warfare to kill the unborn for any reason in a nine month pregnancy began. The sewage disposal pipes of some abortion clinics became so clogged with the body parts of helpless unborn children that plumbers had to be called to clear them. Over 41 million children have been killed on the altar of convenience. Now, university professors such as Dr. Peter Singer at Princeton advocate the "right" to kill children born healthy up to 28 days after birth.
Wiping her mouth after drinking such vile, America called out for more death. Oregon in the 1990's became the first jurisdiction besides Holland and Belgium to legalize "mercy killing, " or assisted suicide. This poison spread abroad and now old people, not even fatally ill or in great pain, have been killed. Not even atheistic communist China allowed this.
And the overwhelming, vast majority of pulpits remained silent, their pastors abdicating moral leadership. Here and there small groups of believers had great, and sometimes easy, success in stopping the sale of porn, closing abortion clinics, defeating gambling initiatives, and having offensive TV shows cancelled. But when these Christians would try to enlist the aid of pastors to stand against this tsunami of sin, and see God rise up in a power He would like to display most often they were rebuffed. After all, since the American church taught that Jesus was coming back any moment, even today, mind you, in order to take His people back to heaven, why get involved? And so the American church, turning away from being a bright light before a nation breaking God's heart, cowered behind walls of denial and fear to become morally irrelevant.
And God saw. And this holy God was grieved. But hey, what did we care? It was still party, party, party! And besides, "I'm still tight with the dude upstairs." We're America, aren't we? Come on, we're the greatest nation in the world! But God saw our rebellion. And His anger burned.
In Bible days God warned Israel and other nations to repent by sending them droughts, famines, invasions, and other disasters. Look at the deaths and economic cost from God's warning signs, and notice that the cost is increasing:Billion Dollar U. S. Weather Disasters 1980- 2001

In the years since 1980, only three have had just one billion dollar disaster occuring in a year. But in two of those years, 1980 and 1988, the economic damage was $44 and $56 billion respectively. 1983 was the first year in U. S. history that four natural disasters, each costing one billion or more of damage, occurred. 1996 was the first year for five such events to occur. Every year since 1980 we have had at least one billion dollar disaster. source: National Climatic Data Center, of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, 1/1/2002
If God intervenes in the course of nations, why didn't He prevent the 9/11 attacks?
God didn't prevent the attacks because He sees our sin, and us, differently than we do. What is America today? He sees us and our sin as offensive. He sees a nation that has fallen to become an idolatrous nation that has spurned the God Who blessed it more than any other nation. He sees a rebellious nation that has increasingly rejected the authority of His word, His law. And it will become a doomed nation, not seeing that God doesn't fear our prominence or power among nations, and never thinking God would judge it.
God has removed His special protection from America. We have ignored both His clear pattern of dealing with whorish nations in the Bible and the more frequent, increasingly severe natural disasters in our country. And so for perhaps one last time He has upped the pressure. He could have prevented the 9/11 attacks from happening but allowed them in order to warn us. And one year later, after dusting ourselves off and slapping "God Bless America" bumper stickers on our cars, we insist on rebelling more against God. But we don't care and we don't think God does either.
